Ep 120: Wounded Animal - Your Role As Hunter
25 minutes ago
It's the one thing every hunter and PH dreads on a hunting safari, a wounded animal! Tensions begin to rise, panic sets in, everyone becomes to come up with different theories as to what happened and before you know it, a bad vibe sets in that can ruin the entire trip.
When it comes to a wounded animal, everyone has their job. The trackers get to work following the animal and the PH keeps his eyes peeled and his head on a swivel in case the animal shows face again. But what role can and does the hunter play in a wounded animal scenario? In this episode, I answer that question and add a few pieces of advice that could help prevent this feared outcome.
Enjoy!

When it comes to hunting in South Africa, a zebra isn't just a zebra and not all bushbucks are created equal.
In today's episode, I discuss some of the different similarities that you would come across during a hunting safari in South Africa. Plus, I break down the difference in vegetation, climate and topography for each of South Africa's provinces.
You may also hear a little something unique at the start of the episode, if you would like a copy of this song "Round The Fire" then you can reach out to me via email and I will forward on the MP3 file to you.

Ep 118: Outfitter vs PH Loyalty
Monday Mar 02, 2026
Monday Mar 02, 2026
Now here is a real pickle that is often faced by hunters that are returning to Africa for their 2nd, 3rd or 4th trip.
The dilemma of having to choose between hunting with the outfitter again, heading off on a separate with your best bud the PH or maybe even going to hunt with a completely new hunting operation altogether!
It's a tough decision to make, and in this episode I will do my best to provide some insight and food for thought to make that choice a little easier.
PLUS.....I have a new song for you all, so make sure to stick around till the end of the episode to hear the latest track.
If you would like the songs, you can send me an email: jonomchugh@gmail.com and I will forward them onto you.
And if you are feeling generous, want to contribute to more songs, or even donate a beer or coffee in appreciation for all that went into the song, I have a cash app that accepts any kind donations.
Enjoy!

Ep 115: Trackers & Skinners Etiquette
Wednesday Feb 11, 2026
Wednesday Feb 11, 2026
Don't be fooled into thinking that the PH and Outfitter are the only role players in you having a successful hunting safari. While they are extremely important, the real people in the engine room driving the success of the trip is the trackers and skinners.
These are the men we call on when the brown stuff hits the fan, they are the ones we rely on to find those valuable animals, they are the ones that roll up their sleeves and carry out the necessary dirt jobs that lead to you having the trip of a lifetime. So, how to treat them, how you interact with them and ultimately the way in which you conduct yourself around them...will determine the level of achievement you will have on your hunting safari.

The spectacle and wow factor of Africa is all around you while you hunt. It's not just in the trophy, it's not in the challenge, it's not round the fire at night and it's certainly not in the skinning shed.
The real beauty of hunting Africa lies in the weird and wonderful facts that every plant, mammal, bird, insect and reptile has within that you didn't even know about.
In this episode, I will bring 15 weird and wild facts that you can impress your PH with on your next hunting safari.

Ep 112: Warrior Trophies
Saturday Jan 31, 2026
Saturday Jan 31, 2026
When it comes to hunting trophies in Africa, as hunters we often get hung up on size, inches, length or even a "good representative" of the species.
However, have you considered hunting those real warriors of a species? The old battle axes, the ones way past their prime, the ones that defended their ladies, drove off the threats and put their bodies on the line to remain top dog for as long as they could.
Those are the types of animals I enjoy hunting and in this episode I discuss some of the best species that will give you those warrior trophies.
Like the episode? Great, well in that case if you could leave a 5* star review and rating, that would be much appreciated.

My guest on this episode is just down the Texan road from me, Hal Rose.
Hal first hunted South Africa back in 1994 and only returned some twenty years later. Well, as Hal will re-tell, the African bug bit him harder on his second trip and since then he has planned on returning to hunt this beautiful land every year since.
Hal shares some great stories across his 3 trips to South Africa, from Kwa-Zulu Natal, to Limpopo and down to the Eastern Cape. He also shares some great advice for those new hunters, looking at hunting Africa.
If you would like to reach out to Hal and talk about hunting or maybe even get some feedback on an outfitter you are looking at, then you can reach him via email on: halrose01@gmail.com
